Health disparities affect groups of people who have systematically experienced higher social and economic obstacles to health. People who consistently get deprived of the three determinants are at a higher disadvantage from social equalities (Wikipedia Organization, 2020). The obstacles described stem from characteristics linked to historical discrimination or exclusion such as ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, or geographical location. Discrimination is going against an individual on the basis of race, culture, or ethnic origin. It is the denial of doing business, share resources, or denies care. With government agencies, it is a de facto fashion or explicitly law with policies of racial segregation, disparate enforcement of laws, or disproportionate allocation of resources (Wikipedia, 2017). Many disparities against ethnic minorities and cultures continue to persist. Inadequate access to healthcare seems to be more prevalent among racial and ethnic minorities that practice different customs, have different values and beliefs. For example, Native Americans (Indians) and Alaskan Natives continue to have many inequalities as compared to other minorities. Some barriers to adequate aid include segregation and disproportionate allocation of funds, as well as geographical isolation, cultural barriers, and low income (HHS.gov, n.d.). Adding to the barriers are limited access to transportation, limited access to healthy foods, limited access to healthcare, and environmental conditions. The United States government has placed laws and regulations to assist these communities, to bridge the disparity gap.  AI/AN have a lower quality of life, lower life expectancy, and are disproportionately affected by chronic disease as compared with other racial groups. AI/AN has higher risks for suicide, mental illness, obesity, substance abuse, sudden infant death syndrome, teen pregnancy, liver disease, and hepatitis. The leading causes of death amon these communities include heart disease, unintentional injuries, diabetes, stroke, and cancer (HHS.gov, n.d.). As of 2019, there is an estimated 5.7 million people who are classified as American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN). The 2010 United States (U.S.) census showed at 78 percent of the AI/AN live outside of Tribal statistical areas. Currently, there are 574 federally recognized tribes and more than 100 state-recognized tribes. Federally recognized tribes are entitled to benefits such as education assistance and healthcare. The Indian Health Service (IHS) is a United States agency based in the U. S. Department o Health and Human Services. This agency, IHS has a comprehensive health service delivery system for about 2.6 million federally recognized AI/AN tribes. The IHS has been in place since 1972, it has created a series of initiatives to fund health-related services in off-reservation settings. The programs are set in place to deliver medical services, alcohol and drug use prevention education, dental services, mental health services, nutrition education, HIV and sexually transmitted disease education and prevention services, counseling, dental services, optometry services, pharmacy, and health education, as well as other community services (HHS.gov, n.d.). Prevailing disparities among all racial and age groups continue to exists; minorities are at greater risk for being denied optimal healthcare treatment due to industry biases and perception of treatment. For the American Indian/Alaskan Native, the inequalities stem from systemic and unjust social and economic policies and practices. Besides the need for increased funding and an increasing number of providers, especially the many underserved communities, working together with healthcare systems, other healthcare providers, and policymakers to create an impact. There are many opportunities to make an impact. Change is not limited to the workplace but can also be accessed in community-based projects and events. In addition, the healthcare disparity gap can be bridged with our continued cultural awareness, positive and non-judgmental communicationReferencesMonique Adakai, Sandoval-Rosario, M., Xu, F., Aseret-Manygoats, T., Allison, M., Greenlund, K.
