This assignment requires that students follow the Canadian public conversation about the Cree, or Anishinaabe, or Mi’kmaw peoples, particularly the the cases of Shoal Lake, or Attawapiskat, or Sipekne’katik First Nation. Students will find at least 10 sources not assigned in class and in a short essay, ask what solutions have been proposed over the past few years and have any succeeded? Why or why not?Grading will be based on the following criteria: thesis clearly stated, well supported; understanding of basic concepts and cases from class lectures, readings, and films; accurate, critical reading of sources; and good writing and effective communication.Papers should be approximately 4-5 pages, double-spaced, without extra space between paragraphs. All sources should be cited parenthetically (not just sources directly quoted), and a bibliography should be included.
